"Style Watch" on The Hill

Who spent their Black Friday in an overcrowded mall, or Cyber Monday on the couch with a laptop on their lap for hours? The winter fashion trends are here, from oversized sweaters to ripped jeans, to keep you warm and stylish this upcoming season. The Razor interviewed four Hopkins students about their clothing choices, their style, and the must-haves for this winter season. 
Who spent their Black Friday in an overcrowded mall, or Cyber Monday on the couch with a laptop on their lap for hours? The winter fashion trends are here, from oversized sweaters to ripped jeans, to keep you warm and stylish this upcoming season. The Razor interviewed four Hopkins students about their clothing choices, their style, and the must-haves for this winter season. 

Sophia Vranos ’18 described her fashion choice as “comfortable but stylish,” while John Pitkin ’17 called his “dynamic.” 
They exhibited varying degrees of influence from others in their lives. Pitkin said, “I’ve always wanted to wear the clothes that I’ve wanted to wear. I choose out of impulse.” Pitkin said he had “no inspiration” from an external source. 

Meanwhile, Mike Lazarre ’18 explained that “I grew up watching a lot of Bill Cosby...kind of like nineties-oriented, and I liked a lot of the clothes they wore, so that kind of wore off on me.” Saloni Jain ’19 expressly stated that “my inspiration is a combination of certain pieces that I see people wearing in my day to day life.” 

Vranos cited a practical goal, stating that she observed other students who “look warm in the winter.” 
When asked about essential items of clothing for the winter season, Lazarre said, “Definitely big sweaters; scarves are pretty cool. I definitely like black colors, especially when it’s cold outside, since black attracts heat.” Vranos preferred a different color - beige - and was more style than comfort-oriented, saying that she admired trends such as “wearing a sweatshirt with ripped jeans or a jean jacket over a sweatshirt, big scarves, and oversized sweatshirts.” 

Pitkin suggested “jackets, boots.” Jain advocated for turtlenecks and a “cute pair of boots.” 
Based on these responses, it seems as though style consciousness and seasonal comfort weigh roughly equally on the mind of the average Hopkins student. 

Overall, jeans, scarves, and sweaters were popular items. According to Seventeen Magazine, other fashion trends for women include: chokers, velvet, over-the-knee boots, and layering. As for menswear, Vogue introduced puffer jackets and the return of seventies-style “super-long sleeves.” As you kick off your next shopping spree, keep in mind Vogue’s shopping mantra, “be daring, explore the trends and get ready to rock an explosive silhouette next winter!”
