Miles Lourenco: Fantastic Fencer

Lourenco’s passion and love for fencing is apparent: “I love fencing, particularly Sabre, because it allows me to hone my reflexes and reaction time, something that I take pride in and love to work on.” Coach Emilie Waters said, “I have had the pleasure of coaching Miles for the past four years as a Varsity fencer. His love of the sport is apparent. Miles cares deeply about his own success on the strip and the success of his teammates.”

Lourenco’s mindset demonstrates his respect for the sport. Lourenco said, “When you step out onto the strip and you bow to your opponent you’re telling them you are going to comport yourself like a gentleman (or Gentlewoman) and I think this is something many fencers nowadays don’t really understand. Whether you win or lose out there fencing, you need to respect your opponent and carry yourself with some dignity.”

This season, Lourenco has taken on the challenge of captaining Boys Varsity Fencing. Lourenco said, “Being a good captain is all about setting an example for the rest of the members of your team.” Teammate Emma Bucklan ’17 said, “Miles is not only a skilled saberist, but also a natural leader and an enthusiastic teammate. With him at the helm this year, we are sure to do well!” Waters said, “The team’s respect for Miles was made clear when they overwhelming elected him captain for the current season.”

For his final season, Lourenco hopes to push the team to a higher level and to advance farther in States. Lourenco said, “I think this season is going to go great. On the Sabre squad, our starting lineup is very experienced; I’m hoping for us to win team states, as well as all place in the top eight in individuals. The other squads are good as well, and I think this is going to be a solid year for the team as a whole.”
