As a member of the Hopkins Drama Association, a trombone player in the Jazz Band, and the Head of Dance Crew, Vedant Aryan ’24 is an active member of the Hopkins arts community.
As a member of the Hopkins Drama Association, a trombone player in the Jazz Band, and the Head of Dance Crew, Vedant Aryan ’24 is an active member of the Hopkins arts community. Aryan has been involved in the arts from a young age. Aryan “took classes in hip hop, breakdance, and contemporary for a while” in addition to “playing the trombone in fourth grade.” He was also involved in theatrical ensembles at his elementary school; Aryan’s debut role “was when [he] was a munchkin in the Wizard of Oz.”

Aryan ended up acting in his first Hopkins production, Killing Time, by happenstance. After tearing his meniscus, Aryan decided to do Killing Time as he “recovered from [his] surgery...instead of playing a sport since [he] wouldn’t be physically ready.” This decision to participate in HDA led Aryan to become an active member of the Hopkins arts community. He states that this was the “highlight of [his] freshman year.” His career blossomed from there: “I’ve acted in more musicals, one-act shows and plays. Last year, I was the dance captain for Mamma Mia in addition to my role as Pepper. My duty as dance captain involved me helping out the choreographer by going over dances with other students, so it was really fun bringing more of dance to HDA.”
Aryan explained that art is “intrinsically a social practice. By viewing and creating art, I feel more connected to myself and other artists.” Through artistic outlets, he forms friendships and relationships with people who have the same interests as him. After hearing about pre-Covid dance crew performances, Aryan took it upon himself to bring the group back to its former glory. Aryan explains that “Dance crew allows [him] to pass on [his] passion for dance and help others feel more comfortable performing.” Aryan states that he is “most proud of organizing the first Hopkins Dance Showcase.” He describes the immense amount of work they had to put into making this event possible, through “spending multiple hours choreographing, teaching, and rehearsing.” Aryan says, “The event was a huge success and many people enjoyed watching the show.”

has never met. Aryan said that he feels “a greater emotional understanding of a musical artist by creating choreography to their song even though I’ve never met them.”
Dance and drama have become an important aspects of Aryan’s life due to the types of expression that they incorporate. He said, “Art is the highest form of emotional expression. It’s an outlet for me to evoke emotions that are indescribable with just words.”
