Lydia McGrath '17 looks to pass in a game

Lydia McGrath: Lethal Lacrosse Player
Lydia McGrath ’17, a captain of this year’s Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team, has been playing lacrosse since middle school.
“I started playing in seventh grade for [my] town’s travel team because my friends were doing it, and I grew up playing sports with my brothers so my dad encouraged it,” McGrath recalled.
Teammates and coaches alike have praised McGrath’s enthusiasm and dedication to her team. “She’s super enthusiastic about the sport and about us as a team,” said teammate and midfielder Ashley Chin ’19. “She’s always positive, even in the worst situations, which is really important. Her positivity and openness [have] made me feel much more comfortable being around a completely new team.”
Assistant coach Kristen Wich also commented on McGrath’s dedication: “The words that I would use to describe Lydia as a captain would be devoted and tenacious. She has been dedicated to encouraging her team- mates on and off the field.”
McGrath herself stressed the importance of a good team experience. “From lacrosse I have learned that being on a team is really important to me because I love having the support [of the team] in all fields of my life.”
McGrath is a fierce leader and competitor on the field. “Lydia’s competitive spirit makes everyone play for each other. She knows how to act in close games,” said Aislinn O’Brien ’18.
McGrath’s competitive nature is matched by her technical skill. “She is an amazing shooter,” said Casey Goldberg ’20. Amanda Leone ’20 also commented on McGrath’s ability: “She is so good at lacrosse, especially her shot, which always goes in at top shelf.” McGrath has parlayed this skill into statistical success. “[In] my sophomore year I was one of New Haven county’s leading scorers,” she recalled.
But the team-oriented captain’s favorite experiences on the team don’t involve points or stat sheets. “My best memory from [Hopkins] lacrosse would probably be the [spring break] trips to Florida,” she said. “I always came home having made a new friend that I didn’t really know before the trip.” McGrath has started traditions of her own as well, like writing motivational words and phrases before games.
McGrath’s traditions and inspiration will live on with the team long after she graduates this spring. Her determination and tenacity will remain with her at Colgate University, where she will matriculate next fall.
