Gwyneth Maloy: Super Swimmer

Gwyneth Maloy ’17 has been a member of the Hopkins Swim Team since seventh grade. According to Chuck Elrick, the Hopkins Varsity Swim coach, “[Maloy ’17] has a big heart to begin with, but also great determination and work ethic to do her best.
Gwyneth Maloy ’17 has been a member of the Hopkins Swim Team since seventh grade. As a captain, the team sees that quality in her and strives to mimic it in their performances.”

A well-rounded swimmer, Maloy helps teammates understand the importance of being open minded. Prairie Resch '21 said "[Maloy taught me] that no one is just a 'sprinter' or a 'distance-er', and although you may have your preferences, you can swim any race if you put your mind to it." Resch stated that "[Maloy] will swim anything she's put in, no matter if she likes it or not."

Maloy serves as a role model to her teammates. Head Coach Chuck Elrick described her as “a great captain” who cares a lot about her team. “As a captain, the team sees that quality in her and strives to mimic it in their performances” said Elrick. Teammate Sophie Cassario ’20 said, “Gwyneth is really energetic and fun, and she is really supportive and sweet all the time. She also carries herself like a captain and acts as a mentor and role model for the rest of the team.”
Maloy has accomplished a lot in the pool, holding three school records in the 200-medley, the 200-freestyle, and the 400-freestyle.

In addition to these records, Maloy has also helped lead the team to victories at the New England championships in 2015 and 2016.

Maloy has also participated in St. Vincent's Swim Across the Sound: a fundraiser that helps cancer patients and their families with expenses. “The swim itself takes place in August from Port Jefferson, Long Island to Bridgeport harbor” explained Maloy, who has participated alongside other Hopkins swimmers in a relay team which won in 2015. Co-Captains Maloy and Erin Earley '17 are set to participate as a twoperson team in the swim this year.

Maloy stated that one of her inspirations is, in fact, Earley, with whom she has been swimming with for eleven years. Maloy said, “Erin makes 6 A.M. practices a little more bearable.”
Maloy plans to continue swimming next year while attending Williams College.
