Sarah Cussler
I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, Minneapolis, MN, and New York City, in that order. I still love each place and can’t claim just one as home.
What is your academic background?
I earned an English degree from Yale and a M.A. in Education at UC Berkeley. I’ve taught in both public and private schools and worked most recently in Yale’s Writing Center and Academic Strategies program.
What will you be teaching/coaching/advising this year?
I will be teaching English 8, Writing Semester, and Writing for Stage and Screen. I’ve spent the last few years working directly with Yale students who are neurodivergent, so I will also be assisting with Academic Support on campus.
What are your hobbies/what things do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Rowing is a real passion of mine. I also love to go to great theater and sing made-up lyrics while cooking with my three kids.
What is your favorite book/movie/tv series/performance and why?
My favorite performance was an astounding one-day production of the Henriad (Richard II, Henry IV Parts I & II, and Henry V) at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. When, after nine hours of theater, the actors emerged for the final performance and stood before us, they were in T-shirts and ponytails, stripped of their costumes, tired but triumphant. The fourth wall dissolved. Something ancient and magical was alive between us. We broke into spontaneous applause and didn’t stop clapping until our hands hurt.
