New Faculty Coaches- Angelina Massoia

Hanna Jennings ’24 Assistant Sports Editor
Only a year after graduating college in 2016, Varsity Softball coach, Head Adviser to the Class of 2025, and science teacher Angelina Massoia joined the Hopkins community.
At the beginning of her career, she “knew that [she] enjoyed teaching and coaching, but at that point [she] was unsure in what capacity [she] would be doing [these] things.” Having played softball “since [she] was little,” as well as through high school and college, the sport was a large part of her life. Playing softball while growing up also introduced her to coaching, which Massoia elaborated on: “During that time, I had the chance to work with a lot of younger people at clinics and through volunteering.”

During Massoia’s first year coaching Hopkins Softball, she found herself surrounded by “a great team full of passionate players” and was thankful for how “these players helped [her] embrace the pre-existing culture [that she] was stepping into.” Massoia and the team had a successful debut season, and she hopes that the team will continue to rise through the ranks to the top of the FAA standings. Massoia said, “It’s been a couple [of] years since there has been a true season with a playoff, so we will look to accomplish that on-field goal this season.” Massoia also hopes to improve the team off of the softball field, with goals including “maintain[ing] a positive team culture, make[ing] improvements in our fundamental softball skills, and compete[ing] hard in each game we play.”

Massoia’s coaching style and practices were enjoyed by her athletes. Alix Rawald ’24 said, “She did really good drills that actually helped in skills that other coaches may have struggled with.” While practices are time for skill development, the players still managed to have fun. Ava Maccaro ’24 explained, “[Massoia] made me really fall in love with softball. For me, she made practice not feel like a sports requirement but rather something that I look forward to after [school] every day.”

Team members also appreciate how Massoia’s focus extends beyond the softball field. Ellie Alderman ’24 stated, “Ms. Massoia greatly cares that the team is unified. Throughout the season, we bond and create unexpected friendships that make us play better as a team. This camaraderie then leads to us supporting each other as much as we can.” Rawald agreed with this sentiment, adding, “I know that at the end [of the 2021 season] we were a pretty close team.” Alderman summarized her experience with Massoia:, “Ms. Massoia cares about how each player is feeling and wants to make sure everyone succeeds to their full potential.”
